Night Rider Lights at Discount Divers Supply

GEAR REVIEW

At Discount Divers we pride ourselves on not just selling scuba gear, but on giving you accurate information on the products we sell.  That's why we dive and test our gear.  It's in our best interest to help you have a quality diving experience!

On a chilly January afternoon here in Seattle, the staff here at the shop went out for a few test runs with some of the new gear from a recent shipment.  After a few brief dives with new BC and reg set configurations, I was asked to try the Nightrider Sport Diver dive light.  Here I am pictured on our dive using the Sport Diver.  Note the Emrald City skyline!

John Bruels evaluating NightriderThe Nightrider Sport Diver is an alkaline battery 10 watt model.  The power unit holds five D cell batteries in a roughly 7x3 inch container.  A sturdy clip is attached to the back of the unit making for secure stowage on either waist harness webbing or (as in my case) the cumber band of my jacket style BC.

Nightrider connected the light head on the end of a four foot cable.  Strain relief fittings are installed on both end of the cable to protect the connections.  On the back of the light head is a fitting that mates with a shoe connected to either either a hand or hood mount.  When hand mounted the Nightrider Sport Diver cable is simply routed loose in front of the diver.  I couldn't resist trying the hood mounted configuration which comes standard with the lighting system.  Pictured is shop associate Kris Arnold showing off the Nightrider Sport Diver.

Kris Arnold, showing off the Sport Diver Nightrider Sport Diver cable is routed free under the arm and behind the diver to the hood mount.  The hood mount itself is constructed of sturdy nylon webbing and neoprene where it comes into contact with the divers head.  It is fully adjustable to fit any diver.  The adjustable chin  strap cinches the entire assembly snugly onto the head.  The hood mount system is incredibly low profile and my mask strap fit neatly over the top.

Once in the water I was impressed with the brightness of the 10 watt bulb.  While Nightrider offers a variety of HID systems in addition to the halogen Sport Diver, I was quite happy with this systems performance.  The quality of the reflector in the Nightrider Sport Diver was apparent in even quality of the beam with very little hot spot.    Clearly one of the advantages of the hood mount was being completely hands free.  The shoe on the hood mount allows for a very wide arch of vertical direction of the beam.

Overall a very fun and impressive experience with this system.  Considering the cost of comparable canister lighting systems, the Nightrider Sport Diver is a great value.
